Summer league 2014

Postby Likkedeeler #27 Mon Sep 15, 2014 1:52 pm

Here a few bits of information on the inaugural summer league:

- six game days with four teams of at least 14 players each
- players from the UK (SEMLA and NEMLA), Bulgaria, Poland and Germany attended
- refereeing was outstanding with at least two but mostly three refs running the games

The league ended with every team losing at least one game. Victorious were the MerryMen under the effective leadership of Tom Hatton. Second ranked London Nomads under Rob Clark, third Dangerzone run by S. McGregor-Dallas and fourth Foreigners run by Emiliano Conti. Throughout the games, the level of play was typically high and gave some players some very good exposure.

A series of awards was given, including best goalie (Rick Bone, Spencer), best defender (B. Stothard, Hillcroft), best midfielder (R. Stanford, Hitchin), Best Attack (R. Holmes, Spencer). MVP was Rick Bone, MVP (Teamplayer) Duncan Trenholme (Hillcroft).

The league will use its surplus funds to directly support the South Team organisers, details of which are currently being negotiated. The seed funding for the league was used to acquire two pro level goals which will serve the league (and Hillcroft LC) well in years to come.

Gregg Irwin was voted best referee and Camille Hourtane awarded the 'best volunteer' prize.

Keep an eye out for some of the new gimmicks, including new webpage, revamped registration process and lower season ticket prices.

I thought the whole thing was an excellent idea, I'm glad it was well supported and a massive thanks to all the organisers. It was well run and great fun.

I'm very excited to see how the league develops next summer.
