face-off

Postby shakey34 Wed May 10, 2006 1:26 pm

i think face-off is the most important part of the game it starts the whole game off is decides who starts with the ball and to be good face-off man you need practice.(practice makes perfect)
allot of people cheat at face-off by eather messin around with there stick or doing all of these tricks like the two fongures and whistling. 8)

what's everyone's view on taking a face off with a pole? too easy to check if u win vs. ease of quick defence if you lose?
what about if your team has been beasted all match at face? worth putting a pole in just to try and win possession?

any tips for doing it? do any international/college teams do this?

just to let london6 know, when i've faced off against long poles i've found it easy to beat the long poles because the short pole is alot quicker. But the long pole can win the ground balls alot easier, or can check the opposition face off man alot easily if the opposition picks up the ball. So theres no real advantage for either face off man

Are you meaning a longstick to take the face, or having a longstick on the wing? Myself, unless you have an awesome face off man, i like having a longstick on the wing, I defintiely think it improves your team's chances of winning the ground ball, even if the guy isn't great on ground balls, he can make it a lot harder for the opposition to win it. Most of the time an offensive unit should be able to hold onto the ball in that kind of unsettled situation long enough to replace the longstick, and if you lose the ground ball, defending with 4 longsticks is usually (personell dependant of course) stronger. If you are losing a lot of faces or having problems on fast breaks, the 4th longstick can set himself up to pick up the opposition facer straight away, buying your team some time. Having 4 poles can also play into the hands of a clearing team through substiutions.

On longsticks taking face, i've done it a couple of times, think i won them both, but could have been a sympathy thing
The only time he takes his foot out of his mouth, is to put the other one in!

UMAS i think had a long pole that took a few face offs last season. Seem to remember seeing him score once or twice off the face

There have been a couple of times were not only a pole at face but one on each wing have been used.

we used this tactic with a shortie on face and 2 poles on the wings against tom gallon last season, it worked to some extent, and he got snotted!

nice! so that means that you've only got one pole starting in D? i love it.
are there any faceoff moves that are particulary suited/crap with a pole?

Not really about winning ball. About killing their fast breaks.

we had an lsm so we still had 2 at d, was more productive at stopping breaks and it is funny seeing 3 poles on the fo (they had an lsm too)
