here are a couple of interesting articles about Bill Tierney and how he built the princeton d in the 90s (which is mental to watch if you can find a video of it), what he was going for and how the whole slide/recovery package that we all basically use now developed ...
its probably most useful for coaches out there - dumb ass players like me only understand pretty pictures with x's and o's

Good find
Excellent articles and a must read for all defenders & middies.
Bill Tierney produced the US Lacrosse Instructional Video/DVD "Team Defense" which breaks down the key concepts with examples
from scrimmages and live games.
The Princeton defense was a joy to watch and led to three consecutive NCAA Finals vs Syracuse in 2000/2001/2002 which were a battle of styles
between a high powered offense who moved the ball quickly and accurately headlined by Mike Powell in his prime versus a very disciplined, fast sliding controlled team defense of Princeton.
Princeton defense was built on all seven players working as one unit. SLIDE - ROTATE - RECOVER
“We try to be fundamentally sound with our slides,” Pietramala explained. “When you slide, lead with your stick. Slide to where the player’s going to be, not where he’s been. Take an appropriate angle. Slide aggressively, but under control.”
I attended a presentation at NCC given by Coach Tierney which had seats for 750 people, there were about 1200 in the room including lots of fellow NCAA Div I Coaches.
Once you get passed the fundamental scheme there was a ridiculous number of variations that Princeton actually use, so that ultimately they can play different Slide Packages depending on where the ball is and which player is in possession.
Coach Pietramala uses a very similar scheme at Johns Hopkins and has had problems on occasions in recent seasons wih defensive breakdowns
where defenders have found it too complicated and got lost in knowing their specific role.

No Sound?
About 49 minutes in, what happens in the stick check? Was it too short?

Thierney is a legend. Used to go watch Princeton games in the 90s, great lacrosse to watch. Think my brother was coached by him at a couple camps...shame it doesn't show!
Tempted to by his DVD, enjoyed reading the articles.
