Mixed Friendly Tournament

Postby Jamieh Fri Mar 25, 2011 2:07 am

Hi all,

Southampton are looking for a tournament for the end of summer, as far as I can see there isn't one going. Does anyone know of any or would be interested in getting one together? Let me know if anyone else was having similar thoughts.

ta,

It wasn't that long ago that Southampton hosted a mixed tournament at the end of the season - I remember playing in a Brighton 1sts v Brighton 2nds final in May 2009, with at least 8 teams entered - any chance of resurrecting that event?

The facility at Wide Lane is perfect (multiple fields, some rubber crumb, over 20 locker rooms, ample parking and Southampton airport parkway train station RIGHT there), Southampton is pretty easy to get to, and the turnout at NUCC and Imperial Cup over the last two weeks suggests it would be well-attended - I can think of at least three teams who would enter, and also I doubt Pompey, as your varsity rivals in both men's and women's, would back down if you challenged them. Bristol and Cardiff both have mixed teams too, and they are only about two hours' drive from Southampton, as is virtually all of London.

If you build it, they will come.....

I also remember the Southampton Tournament in 2009 and they also did one in 2008 and possibly even 2007. It was a great tournament and a lot of teams were able to play.
Our team would definitely drive down from London if you were to organise another one!

Great news!

Doesn't seem to be much in the way of mixed tournaments this summer and my team really wants to play.

Do you have any idea when this might happen? Thanks!

Well, our last day of term is 17th June, and most exams finish between 1st and 6th I believe. So I'm thinking somewhere in the 2nd week of June should be most clear. What are the end of term dates for other Uni's?

Bluesfest is on the second weekend of June (10th - 12th) - I don't think scheduling anything on the same weekend would be a viable option. Have a look in the tournaments forum on here to see what weekends aren't already taken, and contact chippie on here to get contact details for the mixed team captains.

Maybe also get in touch with whoever organised the imperial cup this year and pinch their contact list?

Would anyone be opposed to having it during the week? Given that most people have finished exams by then so days should just be completely free.

Midweek would be tough for people who work, but uni teams should be okay as that is when bucs was...

Weekend would be preferable as most of our players are working so would be unable to make a midweek tournament!

That would only leave us the weekend of the 3/4/5th if were we to aim for a weekend. We'll consider it but if not feasible we may have to give up on people who work in the week. Our committee starts handover tomorrow, so we will have twice the people to spread the load of organisation by then :)

We have an RAF Lacrosse Training week 4-10th June and might be able to get a mixed team out either that weekend or during the week (We don't normally play mixed but it would be good fun and some much needed fitness and stick skills training), let me know if you get something organsied.

Great to hear, if you're interested, I also have contact details for the current mens and mixed lacrosse team at Sandhurst, and a mixed team that may still be running at a RN base near Portsmouth. We will probably invite them to our tournament as well, but naturally they are a little more tight on availability, so more a future contact for you.

To everyone interested, please could you PM/email me and say what team you are from, how many you are likely to bring, and which day you would prefer out of 4th/5th June. If you can't make either of these, let me know too and we will consider other days, but we are pretty much fixed for that weekend to avoid bluesfest and allow working people to come.

Hope to hear from a bunch of you soon,

Jamie

Slight issue with dates guys, there is something else booked that entire weekend, we are working on getting the Saturday but it's not likely. If you email saying you're interested, could you let me know what dates you would be able to make during the week following?

EDIT: We are definitely booked for Thursday 9th June now, please rsvp if you would like to come and spread the word to other teams!
