It is 'Game Winning Goal'

The goal timings are obviously wrong - don't think the site can handle more than one period of OT - Canada scored 3 in 2nd OT period

What a game the skill level was off the charts, its strange to say but the Canadians are bigger and for the most part stronger than the USA, too many penalties in the end for the US and canada scored in to an empty net after a ten man ride, great tournament so far and the drama is not over as the US and Canada have to face Iroquois yet and they looked very good.

Turku is a great place and the tournament is shaping up to be very exciting!

An interesting write up on IL about the US/ Canada game. Comparing the physical size of the Canadians, to the speed and agility of the US. Also compares the number of Canadians who now have NCAA experience compared to 4 years ago. Stating that these are now genuine field players, though of course they started out as box players. It's obvious that they now boast extremely competent defensive players, an area always considered a weakness. The most interesting aspect is the coaching staff, with the US depending on basically coaches with HS experience compared to the Canadians who have NCAA coaching experience!

I dont think using the excuse of the coaches being stronger for Canada in this tournament is true, in 2008 they had Gary Gait & Brodie Merrill on the staff and USA has always used High School Coaches, I made the observation that the Canadians are bigger than the american team and have athletes all over the field, it was a treat to watch this game as the handling and some of the goals was a different class, the contrast in styles is very fun to watch!

The US selected their team and thought it was good enough to win, they failed to take some stars to this tournament but maybe it is as simple as the Canadians are a better team this year, I think there are still twists to come in this tournament as Iroquois and genuine contenders, we will learn more later today when the Canadians meet the Iroquois in what is usually a huge grudge match!

Great tournament so far and to be honest I would love to see the Iroquois or Canada win it all! if this does happen it may mean that the ream team Olympic Basketball modelis put into play and in the future the US will field an All-Star type team! dont get me wrong the US are solid and we heard a rumour last night before the game that the US may let this one slip to not show too much before the second round!

Out of ignorance: when there's a GWG why do they play out the rest of overtime?

Phil, that must be a glitch in the software which is set up for 'sudden death' in overtime, rather than FIL rules with the two 4-min halves before sudden death.

The 'GWG' is an ice hockey thing, it only appears in the stats after the game - I presume they're using an ice hockey stats package, judging by the 'power play' and 'penalty killing' tabs

Canada 11-9 Iroquois

The Nationals came back from 11-3 down in the 3rd Q to make it interesting, but Canada held on and should now top the Blue Division - and probably face England in the semis
