Phil Jackson NBA

Postby UKLaxfan Thu Dec 05, 2013 2:35 pm

Phil Jackson has won 11 NBA titles running "The Triangle Offense"

he has famously coached Michael Jordan & Kobe Bryant to Championship wins

his Coaching though is known more for his Zen Buddhist principles

1) Giving up control
2) Trusting in the moment
3) Living with compassion

he is also a Rudyard Kipling fan:

NOW this is the Law of the Jungle — as old and as true as the sky;
And the Wolf that shall keep it may prosper, but the Wolf that shall break it must die.

As the creeper that girdles the tree-trunk the Law runneth forward and back —
For the strength of the Pack is the Wolf, and the strength of the Wolf is the Pack.

He has a couple of books Sacred Hoops & Eleven Rings

"It's not about Xs & Os it's about the Jimmys & Joes" - Anon

“They don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Coaching Philosophy is it more about sharing information to help improve a players performance or about showing that you care for the individuals development?

Surely some measure of both - hard to define percentage for each. Alex Ferguson has always had a decent right hand man to do the coaching (Queiroz / Meulensteen) while he deals with overall leadership and motivation. That's the impression I get from the outside anyway.

Ferguson would be an interesting case study

some of his players still love him and refer to him as a mentor and father figure (Cristiano, Giggs, Scholes, Beckham) others loved him until they didn't (Keane, Van Nistelrooy)

One of his key tenets of leadership was trust
- he never ever criticised his players in public (while they were his players)
- he also demanded loyalty from his players

I bet there are a million stories of shenanigans his players got up to that he covered up

Control was also an over riding principle, he was obsessive in his control of power within the club, (players, press & other managers)

his greatest achievement was to tap into the core values & beliefs of millionaires to motivate them consistently regardless of how much silverware they won, it was never enough.

I blame Mark Robins
