A Definition -"Success is peace of mind, which is a direct result of self-satisfaction in knowing you made the effort to do your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming."

yeh, probably best to throw whole thing out based on one phrase

there can't possibly be any value in rest of it

I've never heard about Wooden's Pyramid of Success, his speech on the difference between success & winning has some merit.

his use of prose as an educator and coach is different from modern sport psych & prozone methodologies

core concepts & values struck a chord

"it's amazing what you can accomplish if you don't care who gets the credit" - Harry S Truman

According to Coach John Wooden, this poem was written by George Moriarty, a former major baseball umpire.

The Road Ahead:

"Sometimes I think the fates must grin as we denounce them and insist,
The only reason we can’t win is the fates themselves have missed.
Yet, there lives on the ancient claim – we win or lose within ourselves,
The shining trophies on our shelves can never win tomorrow’s game.

So you and I know deeper down there is a chance to win the crown,
But when we fail to give our best, we simply haven’t met the test
Of giving all and saving none until the game is really won.
Of showing what is meant by grit, of fighting on when others quit,

Of playing through not letting up, it’s bearing down that wins the cup.
Of taking it and taking more until we gain the winning score,
Of dreaming there’s a goal ahead, of hoping when our dreams are dead,
Of praying when our hopes have fled. Yet, losing, not afraid to fall,

If bravely we have given all, for who can ask more of a man
than giving all, it seems to me, is not so far from – Victory.
And so the fates are seldom wrong, no matter how they twist and wind,

It’s you and I who make our fates, we open up or close the gates,
On the Road Ahead or the Road Behind."

There are some amazing books about and by John Wooden. All are worth a read - an amazing coach and teacher.

I've only ever been able to find one video of him:

Well worth a watch.

Rhod in the words of Father Ted - "that would be an Ecumenical matter"

faith can cover a number of things for C of E to Satanism or belief in the Easter Bunny

TW19: that's the same link I put up, speech on Winning vs Success

Is the book any good?

Mr Collier used to swear by a book called something like Building a Champion by Bill Walsh

What's your favourite or most inspirational coaching book?

My favourite coach is Roy Simmons Jr (Slugger) an ex-boxer and artist, who believed that lacrosse was an element of learning to express yourself as part of your overall education.

I like the idea that Coach Wooden was an English teacher

both coaches obviously successful communicators to the Heart as well as the Head

my other favourite was Bill Shankly, core values and man of the people

and on lacrosse front the innovative approach of Gary Gait

Kelly Amonte-Hiller gets her players to perform at a level and intensity I haven't seen in other women's sports but I haven't got a clue how she does it.

ps: TW19 - There is a lot more Coach Wooden available now on YouTube including a Full lecture
