Picking Universities...

Postby Paddyp Fri Apr 20, 2007 8:53 am

Hi im currently at the end of my first year at sixth form so it is time for me to start thinking about which universities to go to...

I am currently playing first team lacrosse for Bath LC and after next year looking to continue playing lacrosse at a University in the South but preferably to remain in the West.

I am Currently thinking of 3 possible courses that id be interested in doing at Uni, History, Psychology or Sports-Psychology, could anyone tell me which Universities in the South offer these courses

You could view it as, you'll come out of university with massive debt, so you might want to choose a university that is actually good and a worthwhile degree. Southampton has lacrosse, is a decent uni, does fairly well in the league tables (or did when I went there), not sure about the courses it does.

Bath uni usually does very well for itself, although I would recommend getting away from your own city. Cardiff is pretty good, Oxford would be good if you could get in, History there must be good!

Or you choose a good course at a non-lacrosse playing uni, and travel to your nearest uni/club and play for them. Most places would be happy to have a player who plays in the Southern prem.

seriously though theres nowhere really that is that far from a lacrosse team any uni u go to will have a club 'fairly' close. pick a uni for the uni not the lacrosse

The question is...What do you want from uni?

1. get a good degree froma good uni and play lax
2. get a degree and play lax
3. play lax get a degree
4. play lax

I'd say dont pick a uni based on whether they play lax or not alone....pick your course and uni, then if you cant choose use lax as a decider....there's more to life than lax (not a lot admittedly, but more there is!)

Or there is the "go to a great university (one of the nest in the country for its course) discover lacrosse, dedicate everything to that and scrape past your degree"

Right Sour?

Always a good option bud...a touch traumatic around exams/cw deadline/results time, but a tremendous experience.

Alright Paddy,

I'd agree with the general view on here, don;t pick a uni just to play lax but as you want to stay in the west you should be fine for uni lacrosse.

Obviously Bath is a sweet ass university with a pretty top draw lacrosse team but as has been said I'd recomend living away from home but you would definitely be welcome in our team if you fancied it, only do the psychology at Bath though, have a big sports department as well but no History.

I'd recomend Cardiff, has loads of lacrosse going on and the uni is very goos and will do most if not all the courses you could want.

Southampton does History and Psycology (or however you spell it) infact its the choice of Birmingham alumni for the PhDs in Pyschology (PEJ). Southampton manages to keep a relatively low profile despite having some outstanding departments and the university is constantly improving things at the moment.

southamptons psychology dept is pretty highly rated, think its triple A to get in, might be AAB.

The history dept is good too, and your timetable won't be to strenuos!

That you ideally want unis that have a good reputation regarding what course you are doing (look up the guardian or times or UCAS lists of which uni has the better courses).
I'm obviously not saying anything about anyone's uni, but it will be something to remember for you future employment.
Then, as the rest say, try to work lax around that. It will be better for you.

don't rely on any stats, they're always bias!
Look to red brick unis or then the russell group....go on open days¬

It also depends on your grades and what the different courses want.
There's no point in people telling you to go to oxford if you're not going to get in!

mosat unis play good social lax, its a laugh and good with beer!
don't bother basing anything on lax alone, go for the degree and the future employment!

Cardiff is top-notch for History and Psychology, good grades required to get in but if you've got them then great... you've also got a choice of 3 clubs to play for. (UWIC, Cardiff uni, Cardiff Club).

On the sport psychology front you could go to UWIC, one of the top 5 sport universities in the UK.
