Veterans Game

Postby Chilli Mon Mar 26, 2012 1:20 pm

There will be a Veterans Game at the Ibis Club Reading at 11.30am on Saturday April 14 as a curtain raiser to the East vs West Play-off Final at 3pm

This is open to all players 40 yrs and above.

Please pm or email Ian Ballantine (S_24_LAX) if you want to play so we can ensure that we have enough for two teams.

Please spread the word to the many veterans out there who may fancy a run out to relive past glories!

Just pinching or adding to Trevor's post.

Just sent the below out to England Lions South. CHANCE TO GET US REALLY GOING FORWARD NOW GUYS.

Gentlemen

The time is starting to tick away towards 2014 and now we have the age groups finalised for the competition (with a US slant to them) it is really time I got my big back side in to action to try to consolidate any plans we have or have not in terms of getting a Southern version of the England Lions up and running (that might be over stating our ability - replace with jogging).

On Saturday 14th April it is the East vs West match down at the IBIS in Reading. Along side the competition there has for a few years been a Vets game. The age category for this is 40 + (or in some cases ++++++). Basically we all turn up have a game, share a beer or two, watch some younger folk (or in the case of some of the Bath players - similar aged) play a competitive match and chat over the good old days and this time potential trips to Denver.

Anyone who does not have any equipment but wants to have a run out please let me know so that we may organise loan equipment for the day.

It's like riding a bike - you never forget.

If this sounds of vague interest to you or any similar aged Gentlemen with a vague memory of the sport can you please let me know if you are attending. Also email addresses of fellow interested parties would be welcome, even if they can not or will not make the 14th.

In respect to potential Denver 2014 - World Championships. The age Categories have basically changed to
Masters - 30+
Grand Masters 40+
Super Grand Masters 50+
Legends 60+
So basically, 5 years younger than 2010.
There has been a lot of talk (mainly in the bars) about the South trying to get a set up to mirror that of the North and get potential teams sorted for 2014 under the umbrella of England Lions. Those of us that participated in 2010 feel that a more local based initial set up would reduce our carbon footprint and the travelling up and down to Manchester and if there are adequate numbers we go it along side the England Lions Set Up. This would give us an ideal opportunity to get together chat some(/plenty) more and endeavour to formulate ideas and garner enthusiasm.

2014 is not really that far away - Denver is a long way away. It could be expensive so early planning and fund raising could be advantageous to all concerned.

The idea is not to make the build up as daunting to all participants but mainly to create a good social network of us who have been there and done or not done it but want to try again, without the travel to Manchester. In addition for those who want to really go for it provide a route to the England Lions Squads and all that entails. We will continue to work as closely along side the existing England Lions Set Up as sensible.

Talking of which the England Lions do have training/scrimmage games over the summer - is it all right if I pass on your email addresses to the organisers.

So initially, let me know whether you can come and play on the 14th (which does not make you a gullable target for 2014 if you don't/can not make it) but you will become part of the gang. We want every one to have fun and enjoy playing lacrosse against similar aged people. We want every one possible to be made aware of what we are planning and aiming towards so feel free to forward this email to all of similar longevity who might have a vague interest.

Bit of Prep ------ think we may need a banner or name to bill ourselves under --- early suggestion S(outhern) O(lder) A(ged) P(eople) Stars. More ideas more than welcome.

Looking forward to seeing you or as many as possible on the 14th at Reading.

So spread the word amongst your club members - past and present - and let's reallt get this going.

Name suggestions not restricted to those who comply with the age barriers - you more youth full readers are welcome to add your suggestions - but keep it cleanish.

Details Just sent out to all the guys - please pass on to anyone else interested.

Just so I have a clue of numbers participating please let me know if there are any more.

SOUTH OF ENGLAND MEN’S LACROSSE ASSOCIATION

ANNUAL VETERAN’S MATCH
SATURDAY 14TH APRIL 2012
PRUDENTIAL IBIS SPORTS GROUND, READING

Gentlemen

We have accumulated a significant number of volunteers to participate in the 2012 Veteran’s Match on Saturday 14th April but still have room for a few more so feel free to encourage others to attend.

Our face off time is 11.30 and it would be helpful if we could assemble some 15 minutes before to sort out the teams. The plan for the teams is to split down to playing positions and then divide the numbers accordingly. So it will not strictly be an East/West split but hopefully a balanced structure.

Other than your normal playing equipment can you please bring with you a white/colour reversible bib or a white shirt and coloured shirt (ideally numbered). Don’t worry if you haven’t got these as hopefully between us we will have adequate. If you do not have any items of playing kit and would like to loan some for the game please let me know so we can bring some gear along.

Following our match there will be the East vs west Play Off Game to see who gets automatic promotion to the Premier League, between East Grinstead and Bath which should be a very competitive contest and a chance to watch some good standard lacrosse.

I look forward to seeing you all at Reading next Saturday and the directions to the ground are below.

All the Best

Ian

Ground Prudential Ibis Sports Club, Scours Lane, Tilehurst, Reading RG30 6AY
Tel: 0118 942 4130

From Reading

A huge thanks to all those Vets who turned back the years and played yesterday in what was a good fun game. Hopefully the aches and pains aren't too bad today and you'll be up for some more Vets action.

Thanks to Debz and Trevor for reffing and to Mark for CBO'ing.

So that's 20 plus 40 plus's and a full stripey contingent.
