Syracuse vs Cornell - NCAA Div I Final 2009

Postby UKLaxfan Mon May 25, 2009 1:24 am

This should be a great final.

The last time Cornell made it to the DI Final was 1988 when they faced Syracuse & the Gaits

The two teams met earlier this season in the Carrier Dome @ Syracuse, a game which Cuse won 15-10

The Cornell Head Coach Jeff Tambroni was an LDO at Heaton Mersey in 1992-3 Season when Mersey won the double League & Flags.

There are lots of articles online about the game but for an insight from one of the players of what it means to be in this game there is a blog in the New York Times by #5 for Cornell.

I'm still supporting Syracuse though

GO CUSE

Do you know if the game will be shown anywhere on a webcast like the other matches. Mainly cos I dont want to pay for the channel on sky.

Just get a few mates together and go to any pub with setanta and they'll have it. Just ask for the channel to be switched. And this time there won't be any bloody rugby to get in the way.

Does the pub not have to have ESPN America subscribed as well? We have got a Setanta subscription in my humble home but no ESPN America... :?

Turnovers

Postby davewilliams Mon May 25, 2009 7:28 pm

Cornell again playing with military discipline, taking early lead and probably hoping for Syracuse panic attack. I think there'll be an Orange gear change in the third quarter to get in front and stay there. Strange how much backline possession is being lost by the Syracuse attack through unchased shots.

What a finish! That was intense!

Not the most sensible way to try and finish up a game by the big red though. Not the best defensive sliding, pretty sure they went too early to leave Cody open! What a take away by Sid Smith to cause the turnover that gave Cuse the ball in OT.

MINT, I wish there were more games of that standard to watch. On a weekly basis would be great!

Cornell played 55 great minutes of lacrosse and then learned that when you play great teams like Syracuse, 55 minutes is not enough. The things that stood out the most were:

1) Cornell, who had been very strong on face-offs, let up 4 straight to end the game.
2) Their defense, which had stymied the Orange attack all afternoon, closed up into a 3-3 zone shell which allowed 'Cuse to sustain their offense (something they were unable to do most of the game.)
3) Cornell lost the ability to control the ball both in transition (final play of the game - where was the slow clear?) and on offense (with that middie getting stripped 1-on-1 about 25 yards from the goal).

Great teams take the opportunities they are given, and Syracuse did exactly that. Well deserved win to them. Only goes to show that no game is out of reach no matter what level you play.

p.s. Fun chat w/ the UK boys in the streaming video chatroom!
