There are no other specs are there?

Just flat based?

Swansea are looking to get two new goals that fit the regulations for next season.

Why do they need to be flat? (Not looking for league goals just curious about prices)

The new rules, officially introduced from September 2011, require goal uprights to be either sunk into the ground or supported by flat basepipes.

SEMLA was granted a dispensation for all clubs until the start of the 2012-3 season but since many clubs cannot afford to buy new goals now and have perfectly good goals already, SEMLA has now requested a further dispensation until clubs replace goals when they need to.
This has not yet been confirmed, hence no notice has been advised to the clubs.

However, it makes sense, if you're spending money on goals for league use to get the correct ones now.

at the moment the ball can go in the goal but hit one of the ground pipes and bounce out. By having flat pipes, the ball, having crossed the line, would be less likely to come out, removing any uncertainty as to whether a goal had been scored or not.

Exactly Dom, thanks for clarifying the answer.

Although it is an exceptionally rare event in my experience, it is possible for a ball to hit the ground pipe and bounce back out again with obvious consequences for referees and players.

It does seem to be quite a rarity, are these international rules we're falling in line with then? That's a huge expenditure for an event that rarely happens and when it does how often is it a game changer? Hillcroft have flat ground plate goals already luckily.

Yes they are FIL rules and yes it's exceptionally rare.
The cost reason is clearly why SEMLA is asking for a dispensation until Clubs need to buy new goals.

Massively appreciated it is too! Do the replacement goals have to carry any special certification or could you essentially take the dimensions of a goal to a mate who owns a blow torch and some scrap metal???

Here's the rules concerning the goals, you can make your own as long as they meet these specs, there's no official certification scheme;


RULE 2 THE GOALS

2.1 Each goal shall consist of two vertical posts joined by a rigid cross-bar.
These posts shall be 6 feet (1.83 metres) apart and the top cross-bar shall be 6 feet (1.83 metres) from the ground; all inside measurements.
The goal posts and cross-bar shall be collectively designated the pipes.

2.2 The goal posts shall be centred and shall be placed 80 yards (73.15 metres) apart and 15 yards (13.72 metres) from each end line.

2.3 The pipes shall be made of wood or an approved metal or alloy and each shall be of not more than 3 inches (7.6 centimetres) square or equivalent circular cross section.
The material used and the shape shall be such as to prevent injury resulting from collision with them.
The pipes shall be painted orange or white and secured to the ground.
A line shall be drawn between the goal posts to indicate the plane of the goal, and it shall be designated the goal line.

2.4 The goal posts shall be:
- either sunk into the ground so that no ground pipes are used;
- or supported by flat metal bars, no more than 0.5 inches (1.27 centimetres) thick.
Goals should be constructed in a manner such that when a ball enters the goal
mouth and it is a goal, the ball shall not re-enter the field of play.

Not as rare as you might think. I can think of 3 clubs here in the North (all Premier 1 Div.) where the goals are illegal and they have goals missed on a weekly basis. Whilst flat based goals do not guarantee that the ball will not bounce back out it sure reduces the likelihood by a significant %.

I believe that Rage Cage does a flat based version, or they can convert existing goals to a a flat base. You need to call Ray Harry in Hitchin who is the Rage Cage Rep to confirm this.
