Stockport LC

Congratulations to Stockport Lacrosse Club 1st Team

Their magnificent undefeated run of games finally came to an end on Saturday when they lost to Cheadle 11-9

When was the last time they lost a game?

I remember they lost to Heaton Mersey in the Flags semi-final a few years ago

I can't remember the last defeat in the League

They have had some key transfers who have definitely helped their success
Ben McAlister
Andrew Baxter
Mark Reynolds

What is the secret of their success?
What are they doing different from every other club?

From someone using second hand knowledge and snippets picked up around the lax community it seems that:

1) They train together and train well
2) They are very fit
3) They have talented players from their Junior system
4) They have picked up 3 England Internationals (or ex) through Transfers
5) They have a dedicated coaching team at every match day.
6) They play hard
7) Other teams have always lacked one or more of these elements which has made Stockport so hard to beat.

Excellent points
the role or importance of 5) Coaching is huge IMO
Hats of to
Sean Ring
Keith Gosnay
Ravi Sitlani
Simon Rowlinson

who have all been involved over last 10+ years

But they couldn't do it on their own, there is a will to win and a will to prepare to win which is impressive.
They have managed to maintain competition for places with a very strong A-Team, so that the level of training and practice stays high.

I've heard of others clubs where once players have been selected for 1st team they don't bother training anymore.
- Also book holidays during season missing games
- Miss games for social reasons with no consequence

Competition for places and will to prepare to win are keys for me but still doesn't explain how and why Stockport LC manage it and other clubs don't

There are a core of Leaders at Stockport again which other clubs lack
I believe Chris Bland has been a huge positive influence at Cale Green

I'm sure there have been others

Going forward you could ask why haven't Brooklands or Timperley progressed from Junior success to seniors?
another thread perhaps

Many of the Timperley junior team (I'm looking at a couple of successful U19 teams) left for college/university. Once graduating, few come back (jobs etc). Result is the 1st team is largely disconnected from that programme (players join from other clubs/areas of the country) and there is little follow through from the junior success. Point in favour of this explanation is this season's better performance - Mikey Armstrong; Jay Armstrong; Jack Brook ;Ollie White; Tim Blower - and others I can't bring to mind at the mo. Possibly Tommy Kirkland may be back from Sheffield Uni next year; Tom Bracegirdle also. All are from the junior program. Brooklands are in the same boat re losing junior -> senior players (er....Andy Baxter being a case in point.)

I agree with the Timperley Model...Nottingham have had a number of Timperley Players over the last 5 years and non of them as far as i am aware are now back playing there

Max Sandy - Now at Spencer
Dave Gill
James Pilkington
Tom Davies

George Allen and Will Hawksley are currently in Nottingham Studying

Many dont go back due to work - 3 of the above are/were medical students, therefore leaving Timperley with little long term return on what is one of the stronger junior programmes.

Ther four above i believe all went to Altrincham Grammar, and by the very nature of the school will inevitably go on to university and probably not back home.

How many Stockport players have gone off to uni and not come back? i have no idea but it would be interesting to get a general picture

Thanks for the post Dave

The run had to end at some point, close to eighty game winning streak in the league, not sure if that has ever been done before, only the 2nd loss in over 41/2 years. The intensity and quality of coaching by Keith Gosnay means they each know their own job, Cheadle were excellent on the day but the tenacity of the Stockport team came close to overturning the score line late on with a never say die attitude.
I wouldn't put it past them to go on a similar run.
