British Consulate Delay Iroquois Nationals

Postby UKLaxfan Fri Jul 09, 2010 9:12 am

Indian Country Today wrote:NEDROW, N.Y. – The Iroquois Nationals Lacrosse team is scheduled to play the opening game in the 2010 World Lacrosse Championships in England, but the British Consulate has refused to recognize the team’s Haudenosaunee passports and has delayed issuing travel visas while awaiting assurance from the U.S. State Department that the group will be allowed back into the United States.

The 23-member team and their entourage of family members, supporters, and fans – around 50 people altogether – are to be fingerprinted for visas at the British Consulate in New York on Monday morning, July 12. The hope is that the State Department will tell the consulate by then that the team and entourage will be allowed to return to the U.S. If that happens, the team will depart for England that evening.

Someone should be calling the Brtitish Government about this and putting in a solid case, they are the creators of this great game and the World Games would not be the same without them.

After all they are the Native Americans and owned the land long before we and others ever got there how can we not respect their culture and passports, what do they want them to do go to Calais and stow away on a train?

They are great people but get no respect!

I bet the British Consulate is not the only one who would question this.

All they are doing is confirming that they will be allowed back in the US. I can't imagine that there would be a problem, but the ball is now in the US government's court. What I don't understand is why this has been left so late. Surely the team/organisation would have looked into this before a week to go? I assume they could have received confirmation from the US government and provided the British Consulate with the information way in advance.

The Haudenesaunee Passports have been used since 1990

The Iroquois have already been to England in 1994 on their own sovereign passports

Why would you think the British Consulate would now decide to not recognise the Haudenesaunee Passport?

Pencil pushing jobs worths

It doesn't reflect well on British Consulate, or Lacrosse in this Country where the Government doesn't even know we exist.

It is their Country - their sport - their passport

A lot has changed in terms of US immigration procedures since 1994 uklf!

Without meaning to be too disrespectful (and playing devil's advocate to a degree), but is it their country? Is the confederation of tribes recognised by any international body other than the FIL?

The problem isn't the US immigration

The British Consulate refused to recognise Haudenosaunee passport, Canada 2006 was OK, Australia 2002 was OK, things have changed since 11/09/01 but somethings haven't.

I think it is disappointing that this has happened

The British Consulate refused to recognise Haudenosaunee passport

From the limited info provided by the article, it seems that the major issue is whether or not they will be allowed back into the US, which is what is causing the hold up. Did the US government in 1990 issue a worldwide report emphasising the validity of the passports? Sounds more like the British Consulate is worried about what the US thinks than what they think themselves.

I wouldn't be surprised if the same issue came up previously at some level, but was dealt with effectively and was not made public.

I still don't understand why they didn't sort this out months ago.

Some times people bear a grugde

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Michi ... ac#History

On June 2, 1763, as part of the larger movement known as Pontiac's Rebellion, a group of Ojibwe staged a game of baaga'adowe (lacrosse) outside the fort as a ruse to gain entrance. After gaining entrance to the fort, they killed most of the British inhabitants and held the fort for a year before the British retook it with the provision to offer more and better gifts to the native inhabitants of the area.

The article says that (as per usual visa proceedures) the team et al are scheduled for finger printing on the 12th ie Monday.

So the consulate haven't delayed them at all yet....

Aside from the inconvenience and embarrassment of the delay, this is expensive. I hope they can manage the cost.

suppose it is one way of us staying in the top division.
League restructure I told you so 10/3/2011(looking good on this one)
Prem division to two leagues will result in the prem division failing and being combined with Nemla 22/3/2012
the proposed restructure to 8 teams in each prem league will only last a couple of years until it has to be restructured again due to teams dropping out. 13/12/2012

The British wanted the team to travel on U.S. and Canadian documents because there is no category for Haudenosaunee in their visa process, Gonnella Frichner said. But the Nationals will be competing against U.S. and Canadian teams.

If that bit is true, and is the real reason for the delay

Hopefully they will arrive in time and this will be a storm in a tea cup but if they don't arrive in time it will be a major mishap.

Perhaps we can query the Colonials from USA, Canada & Australia and make England favourites
