There are only a handful of active referee's in the South. Rob Collinge ref's mostly Blues matches, Trevor Rogers - Reading, Miles Whittle and Jon Harrop - Bath, there are a couple more on this basis - Simon Peach and James Kellam probably do different fixtures most weeks, but they tend to go to Premier League matches.
Which is why it is the home teams responsibility.

Having played with and without a ref teh answer to teh original question definitely changes depending on who's playing, I have found taht Uni teams tend to be more physical in an uncrontrolled manner and things can get sloppy if its two uni teams playing each other with self refs.
However some of the more experienced teams playing against uni teams are able to calm the game down a bit and so self reffing can work. When we do have a ref we collect a mesely £1 from each of our players, but considering that games are on saturdays, and we normallly have 12-13 players AND saturday nights are £1 a pint the Ref usually get all his drinks and a kebab paid for! Now thats insentive!
