What is the best place and time do do a face dodge?

Postby tobylax Fri Jun 01, 2007 8:39 pm

Hi, can anyone tell me the best time and place to do a face dodge because when I see people do it in matches, it really fools the defender marking them and they often get a goal out of it.
Thanks

You've really got to 'sell' the pass or shot to the defender in order for it to work. Think about your body position when you shoot or pass and be able to reproduce this to make the defender think that's what you're going to do. Much as you would need to do with a cruyff turn in football.

Better still, practise so much that if a defender gives you the chance you can change your mind at the last minute. For example, wind up to shoot, but if the defender flinches, jumps at you or tries to over plays your hands you then have an extra option of face-dodging rather than just cranking.

A face-dodge straight away off of a pass when you are positioned on a wing position often works quite nicely. As Mark Millon suggests in the DVD, if the defender over-plays you on your stick-side then a face-dodge might be a possibility. If the defender over-plays you low, then a pump-fake might come into play.

Remember to tuck your stick away, rotate your shoulders and use your head and shoulders to protect your stick as you step by the defender.

As you're from Timperley I suggest you ask Ex England player Marcus Sandy to show you.

Whitey, has is right.

The best time to do a face dodge is when you opponent is charging towards you.
This dodge is not solely for attackmen. Defenders and goalkeepers should learn this dodge and can use it when clearing.

As Whitey said it's not just about pulling the stick across your face, you need to protect the stick with your body by rolling and dipping with your shoulders.

The wings or on the post are probably the most common places to do an effective face dodge usually when a defender is sliding towards you at full speed.

It is important that you don't change hands and that you dodge from the correct side of the goal to improve the angle on your shot i.e. if you are left handed dodge from the right hand side of the goal as you look at it from halfway line, or vice versa for right handed player.

I often do it right before the defender poke checks. You will usually avoid the poke check and get around because they have to recover from the missed poke check. And if they dont miss tey will probably end up hitting you in the face mask causing a penalty

Sounds like a pretty sound example of how not to throw a poke check from whoever was defending you there.
