Cradling with the stick up

Postby DanSawyer Fri Jun 22, 2007 3:20 pm

I've been watching th NCAA games recently, and when they're in the circle around the goal, passing the ball around, the players seem to catch it and bring the stick back then they look for the pass with the stick back over their shoulders ready to pass.

As they do this they seem to do an odd cradle. It looks like they're not using the wrist so much as moving the whole stick round in circles. Am I mis-seeing this or if not how do they do it - when I try the ball falls out. It's not in any coaching manual or section I've seen.

This type for cradling is sometimes referred to as "Bottom Hand Cradling". It's when the bottom hand controls the cradle, as opposed to the most commonly used "Top" Hand Cradle. Bottom hand cradling is hard to teach and takes some time. When mastered, it's a great way to be in full stride and have your stick in a shooting position.

Make sure you practise in gloves. I had it down quite nicely in front of the mirror, then put gloves on and it was all over the place.

I find it helps if you get the fakes down first.

Its the same motion as a fake but with much less shoulder movement. I'll show you when we hit the field again.

To be honest I would leave the fake well out of it until you have mastered the art of the cradle.

Throwing the fake in too soon can take away improvements on the area you should be concentrating on, believe me I know!

I fake too much as a result. Works though!
