Re: Can we really grow LAX in the Winter?

Then by your own reasoning you're asking the wrong people the wrong question by bringing the issue here. I agree with most of what you say but your argument would imply that people with little to zero knowledge of the game would potentially be attracted to take up the sport if a time period that sui...

Re: Can we really grow LAX in the Winter?

SEMLA had a full and open discussion of this topic for most of last season that was formally extended to every Club and player to contribute. There is a thread somewhere on here that covers some aspects of it. All of the reasons to change that you state above and others were covered and all of the c...

Re: Hidden Ball trick

MAD, please re-read what I wrote, I said that the defender would not be guilty of an offence on the decoy player, unless what he did would have broken the normal rules of contact. Fortunately such deception plays are rare but common sense says that you couldn't have the situation where a goal was sc...

Re: Results 23rd March

Since there seems to be a lot of Norwich bashing going on here, I'd like to say that I've played at Norwich twice and both times we went to a really nice pub and had a good meal provided by the very friendly Norwich players. If 'standards' have slipped then it's a shame but due recognition should be...

Re: Hidden Ball trick

OK, I'll have a crack and see if it makes sense. If, as a result of a deliberate deception play, a defender checks or bodies the decoy player then, as long as what the defender does is within the established rules, then he cannot be guilty of an offence when the ball is subsequently revealed to be i...

Re: Competent Referees

SEMLA introduced a policy approx 5 years ago which required Clubs to maintain a minimum of one basic level referee per team plus one extra for the club, so a two team club would need to maintain three referees at minimum basic level qualification. Clubs were given 18 months notice and those who fail...

Re: Should we move SEMLA to the Summer?

There have already been several Summer League/Tournament experiments over the last 15 years in the South. They start on a flush of enthusiasm, reduce to a smaller number when the locations are announced and shrivel to nothing by the end of the period. There's 12 month lacrosse already all over Europ...

Re: Should we move SEMLA to the Summer?

There is not one shred of evidence that a move to abandon winter lacrosse and play in the summer only would increase the pace at which lacrosse expands. Those in favour of this base the view on opinion and speculation not on market research, or facts and data. The same is necessarily true of those ...

Re: Should we move SEMLA to the Summer?

It's easy to think of lacrosse as never changing but in my 45 years in the game, I 've seen the introduction of boundaries, the removal of the stand on the whistle rule, the introduction of the ten-a-side game, rolling substitution, plastic sticks, compulsory helmets and gloves, banning of wooden st...

Re: Should we move SEMLA to the Summer?

John, there are no 'sweeping statements regards National fixtures and International commitments' anywhere in anything in this thread from me. I'm sure that anyone else reading your comments will be equally baffled. It's a bit of a stretch but the closest thing is when I point out that every other Eu...

Re: Should we move SEMLA to the Summer?

Matt, a really good document for people to consider, actually I'd forgotten that you'd done it until today, but did you mean Point 5 seriously? There are always players moving into the South from the North, Scotland, Wales, all parts of Europe, USA, Canada, Australia etc and joining South Clubs, do ...

Re: Should we move SEMLA to the Summer?

John, please re-read what I wrote, I can't see anywhere where I've implied in even the tiniest way that the MPC would or would not approve such a change. This subject was brought to the Committee on Monday and the decision was to open the discussion to the members, which is what we've done. In SEMLA...

Re: Should we move SEMLA to the Summer?

Every other European country plays in the summer and they cope with the Euros and the Worlds.

Is it right to shape your entire programme around events that take place every couple of years and involve a tiny number of people?

Wilkinson Sword/Iroquios Cup games could still happen regardless.

Should we move SEMLA to the Summer?

At the SEMLA Committee meeting on Monday Feb 4, it was decided to open a serious consideration of the proposition to move the SEMLA League permanently from the Autumn/Winter to a Spring/Summer period. There have been several debates between a small number of people over the last decade that have pet...
