Wear what you feel comfortable in. I guess that the top goalie's wear minimal padding for a reason, other than being nuts. Football shin pads really don't limit your movement, I wear them under my trackies. I do tend to make a lot of shin saves though. I once wore thigh pads (we were playing Durham)...
