Re: Crease Violation & Goalie Interference
Phil, not being critical of you asking the questions at all. In fact very pleased that there are some questions being posed in the Rules Forum. My question back to you was, "why only one referee"? As I have stated one referee cannot see everything and you pointed out you do not have this l...

Re: Crease Violation & Goalie Interference
Phil Ha no, absolutely not. I'm brining it up as I don't know the answers and it came up in a BUCS game on Wednesday. I'd like to know what to do for as and when I have to call it. Was tough for the ref on Wednesday as there was only one referee. Some some things were missed - which is fine, there ...

Re: BUCS-specific question re pitch markings.
The reality of the situation is that you need to manage the risks on the day. This is what we get paid the big bucks to do. Where do markings fall in this? Depends really. So for instance, the gate is marked out too small. 5 yards rather then 10 yards (common error). If we leave it too small then th...

Re: Referee Panel unfit for purpose?
Glad to see that there are a few out there that can see that refereeing is a viable option to staying in the game. Plenty of international opportunities exist and as the games grows there will be more. As The FIL Chair of Men's Officiating I count on England to be able to help send good solid refere...

Re: Mesh Colours
Rule change passed at the FIL GA last month which deleted the word substantial from the wording, so in essence multi coloured mesh would be permissible. Only caveat is that the mesh cannot make it look like there is a ball in the stick when there is not, and that it cannot make it look like there is...

Re: Goalkeeper possession
OK, my view: If no part of his body is touching the ground insude the crease, then he does not have the usual goalkeeper privileges. He doesn't have possession yet - it's just a loose ball covered by a stick. He can be checked. He can move so as to enter the crease, and possession starts when he's ...

Re: Lift Check
The problem is Don that it may be illegal, but under what rule? What creates a "hold" is not defined "A player shall not hold an opponent". If I hold a cup I am grasping it , if I rest my fingers on the side of a cup am I holding it? so it is a question of interpretation. If we ...

Re: The plung and pop
Subtle difference between being stuck on the back and carrying it on the back. More often than not these balls are stuck on the back. Only guidance I give here is that if you were to showboat that in front of me to prove me wrong I would say, my error and then throw a flag for UC. We don't suggest t...

Re: Lift Check
All valid points. Stick on elbow even in a liting motion would be illegal. Not saying though tha tit will neessarily get called I've seen this used quite effectively whena long stick is trailing a player on a ground ball and they nudget the elbow just as the attack player goes to pick up the ball. L...

Re: Rage Cage/Goals
Not as rare as you might think. I can think of 3 clubs here in the North (all Premier 1 Div.) where the goals are illegal and they have goals missed on a weekly basis. Whilst flat based goals do not guarantee that the ball will not bounce back out it sure reduces the likelihood by a significant %. I...

Re: Referee Courses
Actually we had this discussion at the FIl and they wanted us all to move to the generic term "Official". Sandy Goldthorpe - Chair of Women's Officiating and myself as the FIL Chair of Men's Officiating agreed that it would be better if we retained separate identities for each of our offic...

Re: Cross Checks, Abuse, Slashes & Trips
Ice pick checks are legal, but they better land on stick or glove. Not done properly really dangerous. Problem is most players do not have the skill to use this check. Indoor lacrosse have made this check illegal, but I would not advocate we take this out of the field game. Just penalise until the u...

Re: Cross Checks, Abuse, Slashes & Trips
Agree with Moaning Git's assessment. The big problem is that players, coaches, some referees, and fans do not know the rules. As John points out, the goalie in this situation did not know that trapping the ball in the crease which includes the crease line is deemed goalie possession. How the hell can...

Re: What would you call?
3min expulsion for spearing and targeting the head.
Clear intent. The offensive players head was ducked down for quite some time, so not as though he ducked into it.
